Rajiv GH sees drop in death rate after launch of trauma care centre
Following the launch of the Trauma Care Centre at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in January, there has been a significant drop in the mortality rate at the hospital, claimed doctors.

The Dean of the hospital, Dr R Jayanthi, said that the mortality rate (the number of cases received versus the number of people who died) because of trauma have come down from 7.6 to 7.4 since January and those due to medical emergencies have come down from 5.2 to 3.3.
“The centre has helped minimise accident related complications and thus reduced the number of lives lost,” she said.
“In January and February, we received 1,576 road traffic accidents related emergencies, of which 1,219 were admitted. We also received 62 cases of Train Traffic Accidents and 402 cases of assault, of which 35 and 273 were admitted respectively,” she added.
With around five workers (or green brigades) having been recruited for the programme, segregating patients to wards in the centre — based on their level of injury — is easy. “The victims are received at the new entrance of the Tower-II Block, near the Trauma Care Centre, where their order of treatment is decided,” said a doctor at the hospital.
The critically injured will be sent to the Red labelled ward, severely injured to Yellow ward and patients suffering with minor injuries will be sent to Green ward,” she added.
Earlier, a TAEI mobile app had also been designed for the same purpose. “The ambulance staff enter patients details into the app, which helps the centre monitor the condition in which the patients are being brought to the hospital, besides keeping track of the ambulance’s location,” the doctor said.
