Chennaiites thrilled with Corporation’s new 17km cycle path
Cyclists pedalling down Kamarajar Salai near War Memorial would be thrilled to spot a green top, with the icon of a cycle marked – clearly demarcating the dedicated lane for cyclists on the city’s most popular cycling circuit.
Chennai
This is Greater Chennai Corporation’s effort to create a 17-km dedicated cycling path covering the track around Island Grounds, Kamarajar Salai near Marina, Sardar Patel Road, Raj Bhavan Junction and Elliot’s Beach.
The Corporation’s 17km cycle track project, for which the track marking on the roads are underway, aims to provide a dedicated lane for those commuting by cycle.
“The green top will later be covered with white paint, to demarcate the lane. These signs will come up in Sardar Patel Road, Taluk Office Road and in Besant Nagar, which forms a part of the 17-km track. We will continue to mark out the lane, provide sign boards every 200m and rumble strips. The idea is to ensure that the lane is not over taken by four-wheelers during peak hours. However, it will take time to get the public to leave the cycle lane for the cyclists and not encroach upon it,” said a Corporation official.
Ramanujar Moulana, founder of Cycling Yogis, a cycling group in the city, said, “Though the lane has been there, it was often used by other vehicles. Now, with the green top, it is on a par with the ones I have seen in other countries.”
