Police officials said that the accused have been identified as K Chandrasekar (48), owner of the marriage hall, and P Alexander (34) of Vyasarpadi.

After seeing their advertisement on newspaper inviting applications for BLit course in Mahatma Gandhi Board of Open Distance Learning, S Gopu (59) approached them at the wedding hall to admit his daughter in the institution. They allegedly offered to give the certificate in one year, against the actual period of three years, if he paid Rs 1.5 lakh. Believing them, Gopu paid them Rs 85,000 as advance.

However, when he visited them again seeking admission, they reportedly told him to pay the remaining sum to get the degree certificate without even going to the college. On suspicion, Gopu filed a complaint at Kodungaiyur police station.

During their investigation, police found out that Chandrasekar was running the fake institution along with Alexander, who is pursuing MBA degree in correspondence. As many as 1,800 fake unfilled SSLC certificates, 200 degree certificates and stamp papers were seized from them. They were remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on.
