City constables seek more share in CM medals
Even as the state government announced increase in number of chief minister’s medals for constabulary to 3,000 from 1,500 every year, many lower level officers are concerned that the work of thousands of eligible police personnel with unblemished records for 10 years would still go unrecognised.
Chennai
“We don’t know the logic behind selecting only 200 personnel from Chennai from more than 13,000 grade one constables,” said a policeman, who has had no black marks during his two-decade long service, but has not found a place in the medal list.
The 200 chosen personnel from Chennai police are expected to receive the medals in a function on Saturday. The medal recipients are entitled for a marginal increase in their monthly salary.
Between 1993 and 2000, as many as 25,000 constables were recruited, and another 8000 were added between 2002 and 2006. This takes the total number of constables with more than a decade’s service to 33,000. Of this, at least 13,000 are posted in Chennai.
“In Chennai where there are 134 law and order police stations, 128 crime police stations, 35 all women police stations and 80 traffic stations, limiting the number of possible CM’s medal recipients to just a couple of hundreds is not justified,” a policeman said.
According to a senior officer, with the increase in number of total medals to 3,000, the Chennai city constables may get at least 500 medals from next year onwards.
