Helmetless driving claims 5 lives in a week
Highlighting the importance of wearing helmet while riding two wheelers, the Chennai city traffic police on Sunday noted that five persons who rode without helmets, died in separate road accidents in the city last week.

According to police, 20-year-old Mohanraj, who used to work as an apprentice in a private company in Maraimalai Nagar, was hit by a lorry while on his way on a bike to meet one of his friend’s uncle in Chennai Airport on March 9. The incident happened at around 1 am and investigation showed that he had a helmet on the bike, but did not wear it.Â
In another accident on the same day, Prabhakaran, (33), a resident of Chitalapakkam was riding on the Tirumudivakkam - Thiruneermalai road around 9.30 am but was killed after his bike was hit by a truck.Â
On March 2 Jayaseelan (60), a retiree from Nammalwarpet off his two-wheeler around 7.30 am on EVR. Road, near Nehru Park. He sustained head injuries and on March 8 succumbed to it. He too gave the helmet a miss, said the police.Â
In the third accident, 32-year-old Murugan, a resident of Tambaram, died on March 9 after he and his father suffered injuries while travelling on a bike on GST Road on March 5. Their bike collided with a bus near Perungalthur. Murugan was not wearing a helmet and had hurt his head.Â
Again on March 6, Vijaya Kumar, 24, a helmetless rider and a maintenance staff in Chennai Airport lost control of his bike and hit a road median in Nazarathpet on the Chennai - Bengaluru highway. He died of his injuries on March 9.Â
