Cops foil family’s self-immolation bid
Tension prevailed at the Police Commissionerate here on Friday after a family of four, including two children, attempted self-immolation when they had come to submit a petition against an inspector.
Chennai
P Jayaraman (39), who had come along with wife Valarmathi, son Selvakumar and daughter Jenifer, poured kerosene and tried to set themselves ablaze around noon.
However, police personnel at the spot prevented them from taking the extreme step. Jayaraman, owner of a small-scale publishing house in Pallavaram, said the Pallavaram police inspector, instead of taking action against those who created trouble for them, has been targeting his family.
According to him, his neighbours Francis, David and Joseph often parked their two-wheelers on Second Cross Street in Periyar Nagar and sat on them along with their friends in the locality. They created nuisance for the passers-by.
When he recently alerted police about them, the three persons along with their mother Arockiya Mary started abusing them and damaged the entrance of his house. When he tried to film it on his mobile phone, they hurled stones and injured him and his wife Valarmathi.
However, when Jayaraman filed a complaint against them, Pallavaram inspector Saravanan allegedly threatened him with false cases.
After the self-immolation bid, their petition was accepted and they were sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General hospital for treatment.
Speaking to DTNext, Jayaraman said that the Deputy Commissioner called him over phone and assured him of necessary action.
