Flight EK433 took off from Singapore at 9.30 am (local time) on Thursday. Around 11.30 am, the pilot noticed smoke emanating from the tail portion of the flight.

As it was risky to continue the flight, the captain decided to make an emergency landing. As Chennai airport was the nearest, the crew contacted the Chennai Air Traffic Control and informed about the emergency around 11.40 am.

Realising the urgency of the situation, the Chennai ATC soon granted permission for the emergency landing.

Meanwhile, officials at the airport began preparing for any eventuality, and was ready with fire tenders and medical teams along with ambulance near the runway to handle any untoward incident.

Much to their relief, the flight landed safely at 11.55 am, airport sources said.

All the passengers were safely taken to waiting hall and helped with food and other essentials, as it would not be easy to take them out of the airport without India visa. When the engineers checked the flight, they found the fault was not major and fixed it. The aircraft was made ready by night and after obtaining due clearance from DGCA, it took off at 9.10 pm with all the passengers to Dubai.
