    SI shoots self at station, two days after Jaya memorial incident

    The incident happened in the wee hours on Wednesday at Ayanavaram police station, where the deceased R Sathishkumar was a sub-inspector in the law and order wing.

    Within two days of an Armed Reserve personnel shooting self to death in Jaya memorial, a similar incident in which a sub-inspector has killed himself with a pistol has shocked the entire police department.

    According to another sub-inspector Siranjeevi, who witnessed the incident, Sathishkumar reached the station at 1.45 am in plain clothes asked him for the keys of arms storage cabinet. Sathishkumar took out a pistol claiming to have some individual work and wrote something on a white paper. He left the paper on the table and went out with the pistol briefly before returning to the station.

    Suddenly, he positioned the pistol on his forehead and panicked Siranjeevi told him to take it off. But he immediately pointed the pistol at Siranjeevi and walked upto the entrance of the station, where he put the pistol on the side of his head and triggered it. In no time, he collapsed on floor and died on the spot.

    In the note he had left on the table, it had been written that none was responsible for suicide followed by a couple of phone numbers of his kin. The entire incident has been recorded by CCTV cameras at the station.

    City Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan rushed to the police station and conducted an inquiry. Sathishkumar's body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for post mortem.

    Hailing from Melayur village in Thanjavur district, Sathishkumar is a Master's degree holder and unmarried. He joined the police department as a director SI in 2011 and has been posted in Ayanavaram since 2014. He had been allocated house in TP Chathiram police quarters. He is the second son in the family with a younger brother and an elder brother.
