DVAC suspect that the bribe was accepted by the warden so as to split it with the jailor.Â
Even though they were acting on information, DVAC men could not pin the charge of corruption on the jailor, Jayaraman of prison II of Puzhal prison. The DVAC sleuths suspect that the jailor was perfectly aware that he was being targeted.
Jayaraman had earlier approached Mahin Abubakker, who was in Puzhal under NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Pyschotrophic Substances Act). He had been entrusted with the task of moving Abubakker to Poonamalee jail.Â
However, Abubakker was not comfortable about the shifting and allegedly agreed to pay Rs 40,000 for not shifting him.Â
Abubakker informed his employee Revington Karthik Leo, from Vellore, a regular at Puzhal.Â
Leo informed the DVAC official who decided to set a trap for the jailor and warden.Â
As per the plan, Leo went to the jail on Tuesday around 9pm and met the jailor. The jailor refused to collect the money, but asked Leo to hand it over to Pitchiah, the warden, outside the prison premises.Â
Leo met Pitchiah, who collected chemical coated money, after which the DVAC sleuths nabbed him. He was later questioned by the vigilance team during the night when he admitted that half of the money was meant for him.Â
On Wednesday morning, he was taken to the quarters of the jailor. The jailor Jayaraman told the investigators that he has nothing to do with the activities of warden.Â
Senior Puzhal jail official told DT Next that Jayaraman was very much working in Puzhal jail on Wednesday.Â
