Weathermen at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that the airport would usually witness minimum temperature ranging between 20 or 21 degrees Celsius. However, it plummeted to 19 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The Nungambakkam observatory on Sunday recorded a minimum temperature of 21.5 degree Celsius.
Weather experts say that the minimum temperature in Nungambakkam has not dipped below 20 degrees Celsius so far. Weather experts attributed this to clear skies and a high pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Speaking to DT Next, SB Thambi, Deputy Director General, RMC, said, “The clear sky led to a drop in temperature as the land breeze blew unhindered during night.” He added that clear skies also led to an increase in temperature during daytime.
K Srikanth, weather-blogger of Chennayil Oru Mazhaikkalam, said, “Due to presence of high pressure area over Bay of Bengal, the wind pattern was more from the land than sea from midnight to early morning on Sunday and it led to the drop in the temperature.”
