After conducting enquiry with school representatives, police said that the management had received complaints about blocks in the septic tank. The three workers who were asked to clean it opened the lid of the ten feet deep tank located between two restrooms but left it open when they took a break.

The school authorities immediately called Keertheswaran’s family but told them only that the boy was unwell and admitted to SRMC hospital. Only when they reached the hospital did the parents realised what had happened to their son.

As the news of the death spread, parents thronged the school demanding immediate arrest of those responsible. By then, most of the school staff had left the premises. A police team from SRMC station rushed to the scene and pacified the agitated parents.

Police said the autopsy would be done on Saturday.
