Students threaten suicide over shifting of law college building
The protest by students of Dr Ambedkar Government Law College over shifting of the institute intensified on Thursday as students threatened to jump off the building.
Chennai
The budding lawyers have been agitating against shifting of the law college away from the Madras High Court.
The principal intervened and held talks with students, persuading them to climb down the building. Police sources said a few students climbed the median on the NSC Bose Road and raised slogans, but were dispersed after a while.
The protest which began on Monday continues even as classes were disrupted. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a law college student said the protest is being led by junior students and will intensify once senior students, who are on a national tour, are back.
“This protest is held every year and suicide threats are not new,” the student said. Justice P Shanmugam Committee had recommended shifting of the college following a violent protest in 2008 and the government had constructed two campuses each in Pattarai Perumpudur village in Thiruvallur district and Thiruporur in Kancheepuram district.
However, students are of the view it is unfair to make them study in a campus located in a reserve forest and faraway from the HC.
