MTC unsure of operating AC buses as summer nears
With a month left before the summer season starts, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is still undecided on operating airconditioned buses in the city
Chennai
MTC sources said that they operated 100 buses in 2008, but all the services have since been suspended due to poor revenue. The fleet also faced the ire of passengers’ due to poor maintenance.
Considering the recent hike in bus fare, officials are now concerned that whether AC buses, if operated, will enjoy high patronage. The transport department hiked minimum fare and maximum fare for AC bus Rs 25 and Rs 150, up from Rs 10 and Rs 100 respectively.
MTC sources admitted skepticism over the operation of air-conditioned buses. Most importantly, they said the government should procure new buses, as all the existing ones are unfit.
When contacted, a senior MTC official said, “we have sent a communication regarding operation of air-conditioned buses to the state transport department, which will soon decide over operation of buses.” Meanwhile, commuters have demanded that officials reduce the AC fare.
“I used to take air-conditioned bus before bus revision. But now, I have stopped travelling in these buses,” said S Philip, who works at a IT firm in Siruseri.
