    Dravidar Kazhagam for Tamil chair in IIT-M instead of Sanskrit

    Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani on Saturday opposed the proposal to set up a Sanskrit chair at the IIT-Madras and said it should be done only after forming a chair for Tamil, which is a classical and living language spoken by crores of people throughout the world.

    He said that the 22 languages listed in the eighth schedule of the Constitution should be given equal importance and chairs for local languages where the IIT is located should be formed. The IIT had announced that the Sanskrit chair would be attached to the department of humanities and social sciences and research would be conducted into Vedic science, he said. About eight crore people living in Europe, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Africa are speaking Tamil, but only a few thousand are speaking Sanskrit, the DK leader said. The IIT is functioning from the taxes collected from the people, he said and charged the Union government with imposing ‘Aryan culture’ in the country.
