The 54-year-old S Moorthy had allegedly set up a small ganja garden on the backyard of well known Vazhakarudeeswarar temple. The police found that Moorthy was maintaining it after denying other temple devotees access to the garden saying that some antique items of the temple were kept there. Police got a tip off on Sunday saying that he, an addict himself, was growing ganja plants, and raided the area on Sunday afternoon. The accused was later picked him from his house.

During investigation, police found that the accused Moorthy (54) of Kancheepuram worked as a watchman in a textile shop during the day and in the night, he worked in the temple. They are still not sure if he was growing the plant for his own use or selling it. The ganja plants were also seized by the police.

Meanwhile, two people in Chennai were arrested for maintaining a ganja garden in a house at Triplicane. Of the two, one was arrested after he posted a selfie with ganja plants of his friend on Facebook.

Royapettah police officers, who were looking for the origin of a selfie with ganja plants posted in the Facebook page of Sasikumar, ended up on the terrace of M Kamal (35) of Neelam Basha Street in Triplicane.

Kamal was growing ganja plants on his terrace and his friend C Sasikumar (22) of Royapettah and had taken a selfie with them and posted it on FB. Police had now arrested the two and seized the plants.

It may be recalled that A 49-year-old writer Charles Edwin Jayaraj was arrested in KK Nagar by the police on January 22 for growing ganja plant on his terrace of the two-storied building. He had then told the police that he was growing it for his personal use.
