Angry that the ambulance reached too late to save the life of a 54-year-old man, villagers at Cheyyur near Mathuranthagam assaulted its driver early on Tuesday morning. This led to protests by 108 ambulance service drivers, affecting the operation of the service on East Coast Road till Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, Manohar from Palayarmadam village in Cheyyur was injured when he was attacked by a cow on Monday night. When alerted, the ambulance at Cheyyur was attending to another emergency. So the ambulance from nearby Pavchur village was directed to pick up Manohar.Â
However, it took about half an hour for the ambulance to reach, by which time Manohar succumbed to injuries. Enraged by this, his kin and other villagers assaulted ambulance driver Boopalan (34), leaving him severely injured. He was later admitted to a hospital in Cheyyur.Â
Angry that their colleague was attacked for no fault of his, drivers of other ambulances under the network that operate in the region filed a complaint against the villagers at Cheyyur police station. They also staged a protest, refusing to operate the vehicles. They were finally pacified after the police and revenue officials promised to take action, following which the protesters dispersed and returned to work.
