Tamil Nadu ready for Republic Day
On the eve of Republic Day, the Governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit on Thursday released a message for the people of the state from his residence at Raj Bhavan.

He said: “I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu on the joyous occasion of the 68th anniversary of the Republic Day. The Republic Day is a day of formal observance by the nation when we recall to ourselves the supreme contribution of freedom fighters and law makers who gave us our Constitution.” He added, “Let us therefore, on this day, resolve to be true to the ideals of the founding fathers of the Constitution, who dedicated their lives for the nation. May freedom fill the air and sovereignty be the life breath that sustains and inspires us.”
Purohit is scheduled to unfurl the tri-colour at the flag mast installed near Gandhi statue along Kamarajar Salai.
This will be Purohit’s maiden Republic Day celebration here after he took over as Governor of Tamil Nadu from Ch Vidyasagar Rao. The Governor will visit the War Memorial and pay homage to the martyrs. Later, he will proceed to the dais set up near Gandhi statue. He would be received by the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, his cabinet colleagues, and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan.
Governor would then proceed to hoist the national flag installed at the venue at around 8 am, according the invite sent out for the event.
Purohit would take the salute from all three Defence Forces, followed by the Indian Coast Guard, Central Industrial Security Force, Railway Protection Force, Tamil Nadu Special Police, Special Commandos squad, Coastal Security Group, and Special Units, among others.
Several schools will also be part of the colourful parade that would follow. Anna Gallantry medals — which is by protocol is conferred on Republic Day — is expected to be given away during the state’s festivities that follow. Following it, school children will present cultural programmes for the guests.
23 officers to receive President’s Police medals
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit will award the President’s Police Medals for distinguished service to senior IPS officers Rajeev Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, welfare, Chennai, and S Manoharan, Joint Commissioner of Police, east zone, Greater Chennai Police during the Republic Day celebrations on Friday.
Police officers are selected across the country for their work and these medals are awarded twice a year on Republic Day and Independence Day. Similarly, 21 other officers from the TN police will be awarded the Police Medal for meritorious service.
