The delegation, which met the CM at the Secretariat here on Wednesday, also hailed the government for opposing the Centre’s decision to scrap the Hajj pilgrimage subsidy.
The delegation, led by PA Khaja Mohinudeen Baqavi, welcomed the government decision to stand up for the rights of the minority. “We are happy that the AIADMK government registered its stiff Opposition in Rajya Sabha when the triple talaq bill was tabled,” Baqavi said.
Recalling the state’s decision to release lifers in celebration of MGR’s centenary, he observed that the announcement made on the Floor of the House and as well as in the MGR centenary celebrations should help secure the release of all the 7 Rajiv murder case convicts as well.
The delegation urged the state government to use Article 161 of Constitution to release all the 7 convicted in the murder of former PM Rajiv Gandhi without waiting for the Centre’s concurrence. “It is possible if the state utilised its Constitutional powers,” he said. He also added that the CM had agreed to consider their request.
Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader Prof MH Jawahirullah, SDPI leader KKSM Dhehlan Baqavi, TMMK leader PS Hameed, and INTJ leader SM Bakker, were among those that met the CM.
