I respect Andal, says emotional Vairamuthu
Lyricist Vairamuthu, who was embroiled in a controversy over his comments on Vaishnavite saint Andal, on Saturday turned emotional and said he had only hailed the woman saint. He also said there was a plot to incite communal violence over the issue.

As protests mounted across the state and the religious Mutt heads staged a massive demonstration in the city and other parts of Tamil Nadu, Srivilliputhur Jeeyar also resorted to a fast demanding an apology from Vairamuthu.
In a video statement, he said, “Is it wrong to sing praise of Andal? I have so much of respect and affection for the saint. I have done research on her poems for three months. I spoke in support of her. She is the first woman voice of liberation.”
Vairamuthu said, “The new generation must know about her, which is why I spoke about her in the first place.”
Claiming his remarks were twisted, he said ‘Devadaasi’ is a woman of high position. The word ‘Daasi’ was twisted to ‘Vesi.’
