Vadapalani police station Inspector G Chandru was on night rounds in the temple neighbourhood, when he noticed an old man who seemed new to the area. He attracted attention of the police personnel who identified the man as Gopal. When police enquired, Gopal told them that it was his son Subramanian who dropped him near the temple. Subramanian, is working in a share trading firm, he told the police.

Following this, police checked the CCTV footage from the area and found that Gopal was brought to the temple in a taxi, while the son came separately on a two-wheeler. “After sending off the car, Subramanian kept a food parcel near his father and left,” local police officials told DTNext.

Subramanian, officials added, promised his father that he would return soon, but failed to return.

The police team then called for an ambulance, took Gopal to a government hospital where the doctors checked him. Later, Gopal was shifted to a shelter near Mangadu.

From the preliminary information that the police managed to collect from the old man, they learnt that Gopal used to earn his livelihood as a two-wheeler mechanic. However, after turning old, Subramanian appears to have found his aged father to be a burden and wanted to get rid of him, by abandoning him in front of the temple. “We are searching for Subramanian; he may be booked under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act,” said an official.
