    Cinematic chase and shootout preceded Nathuram’s arrest

    It took a hot pursuit and a barrage of bullets before Rajasthan police officials managed to nab C Nathuram (28), the prime suspect in Kolathur jewellery shop heist, the hunt for whom had cost the life of inspector Periyapandian of TN police, said sources.

    Along with him, his accomplice, Suresh Meghwal, was also arrested from Gujarat by police officials from Rajasthan, on Saturday. Officials in Rajasthan had intensified searches for Nathuram and his gang after he updated his social media profile photograph – the new picture had him flaunting a pistol, undeterred by the heat on him after the death of the police officer. 

    Following this, Deepak Bhargav, the police superintendent of Pali district, Rajasthan, directed his officials to intensify the search.

    After the cybercrime wing located Nathuram near Rajkot in Gujarat, a team of personnel led by SP Bhargav tracked Nathuram and surrounded him on Saturday morning. However, he managed to escape the in a car after allegedly opening fire at the police. He evaded the police for nearly 30 kilometres, but the police finally surrounded him near a toll gate after the car developed a snag, reportedly after the police shot at it.

    Ever since he escaped froma pursuing TN police team in Rajasthan, Nathuram had kept moving from one place to another for more than 30 times, said sources. Nathuram’s wife Rani, and his aide in the Kolathur heist, Dinesh Choudry, have already been arrested by Rajasthan police, while the police here had arrested his father, Chennaram, and relatives Ellaram, Shankar Lal and Dauram.

    A senior police official told DTNext that a team from Chennai would leave for Rajasthan to bring Nathuram to Chennai for investigation in the burglary case, while Rajasthan police would continue the probe as to who killed inspector Periyapandian. Forensic reports had revealed that it was his colleague Munisekhar’s accidental firing during the shootout in December that killed the inspector.
