Talking to DTNext on Friday, Santhosh, a lawyer and son of the victim Gowri, said that he had raised the dogs only for the protection of his parents.

Though initially it was believed that that two dogs, aged five and one, together had mauled Gowri to de- ath on the terrace of their house in Govardhanagiri in Avadi on Wednesday night, Santhosh claimed it was only the younger dog which had mauled his mo- ther to death. That is why he had decided to hand over the dog to Blue Cross.

His parents stayed on the ground floor of the house, while he, his wife and their three children stayed on the first floor of the house.  Police said that that Gowri went up to the ter- race in the night without being aware of the presen- ce of the dogs there. The younger dog attacked her.

“The woman’s face was completely disfigured, her scalp peeled off,” police said. Santhosh said that the younger dog could have tried to turn the head of his mother, who had fallen face down on the floor. “It could have led to her getting scal- ped,” he claimed.

According to him, the dogs were very friendly with the family members and his kids even sit on top of the dogs and play. But the police believe that the dogs were not very friendly to the elderly couple. Santhosh believes that the elder dog had tried to stop the younger one from mauling his mother.

“The younger dog had scratch marks on his head indica- ting that the other dog had attacked the head of the for- mer,” he claimed, adding that the young Rottweiler was taken to a doctor for treatment. It is not clear why Gowri went to the terrace that night and her husband Chandrasekhar, who is also hard of hearing, does not remember her get- ting off the bed.

    Man shoots neighbour’s dog
A man shot his neighbour’s dog, a native breed, on Friday, for repeatedly urinating in front of his house, in a village near Tirukarangudi. According to police, the accused, iden- tified as Robert, often had arguments with his neighbour Perumal about his dog urinating outside his house. On Friday morning when Perumal’s dog did its usual act in front of his house, Robert shot the dog and injured it. The dog was rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital for treatment.
