Goondas Act on 57 - highest in last 3 years by CCB
The Central Crime Branch (CCB), which is under the direct supervision of City Police Commissioner, has remanded as many as 559 persons in 2017 in connection with 572 cases. Out of this, 57 of them were detained under the Goondas Act, a record in the last three years.

Some of the major cases that CCB handled in the past year included the TNPSC exam scam, in which five staff were arrested for forging answer-sheets. Also, three persons were arrested for fraud in house allocation through Tami Nadu Housing Board. The arrest of seven quacks, who prescribed homeopathy drugs, and five men, including an MTC employee, for printing fake bus passes were the other important cases that were successfully handled by the CCB.
The detention of advocate Vijay Dhandapani in a cheating case worth several crores of rupees and the arrest of a retired professor, Veerapan, for being in service for over 30 years using a fake certificate from Annamalai University were among the other major arrests by the branch in 2017.Â
City police played a pivotal role in the reimbursement of Rs 88.66 crore to 142 students and parents who were cheated on the promise of a medical seat in SRM University, said a release from CCB.
The anti-online bank fraud wing recovered Rs 3.58 crore and returned it to the victims. The anti-piracy wing arrested 242 persons and seized DVDs of new films worth Rs 8.70 crore. Of the 241 cases they booked, as many as 143 ended in conviction while 19 of them were detained under the Goondas Act.Â
Meanwhile, the anti-vice squad rescued 357 women who were forced into flesh trade and reunited them with their respective families. As many as 288 persons were arrested in 198 cases and 10 cars, 30 two-wheelers were seized from them.
