Weathermen at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that the last time that the city temperatures dipped this low was on January 17, 2012 when the mercury touched 16.9 degree Celsius.
According to weathermen, Chennai and most parts of the state have been recording temperatures which stay slightly below normal. While Sunday morning witnessed was 19 degrees Celsius, it dipped to 17.6 degree before sun rise on Monday. They also said that the city recorded 17.9 and 17.8 degree Celsius in 2015 and 2014 respectively. Speaking to Dt Next, S Balachandran, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, admitted that the last three days saw steady dip in the temperature during early mornings.
“The northern winds are responsible for the fall in temperature. This will last for a couple of days.”
K Srikanth, a weather-blogger of Chennayil Oru Mazhaikkalam, said, “Owing to clear skies and the cold West and North-Westerly winds have been blowing early during the day which led to the decrease in temperature. But with low pressure forming in the Bay of Bengal, Easterlies have started picking up strength so in a few days, temperature will begin to increase.”
