Jaya memorial case adjourned to January 19
The Madras High Court has adjourned to January 19, the plea seeking to direct the state to stop the acquisition process of the Poes Garden residence of the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa for the purpose of converting it into a memorial for her.
Chennai
The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose, before whom the plea moved by social activist KR Ramaswamy came up for hearing on Friday, adjourned the plea to enable the petitioner to produce the copy of the Supreme Court order in the disproportionate assets case against Jayalalithaa.
Ramaswamy wanted the court to restrain the government from acquiring and converting Veda Nilayam- the Poes Garden residence in Chennai as a memorial using public funds, since Jayalalithaa was declared a convict in the disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court.
The recent move by the government to survey the property and complete the acquisition under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act has prompted the activist to approach the court.
On August 17, 2017, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that his government would convert Veda Nilayam into a memorial.
