The AC unit in the coach first caught fire due to short circuit and within minutes the entire coach was engulfed in smoke.
On information, fire tenders from Esplanade and Vyasarpadi rushed to the spot and put out fire after a battle of an hour.
An inquiry has been ordered about the incident.
This is second such incident since July, 2017, when a tool van caught fire at Chennai Central.
