“We are in the process of identifying the riders,” a senior police official said.

The videos of bike riders dragging police barricades has gone viral on social networking sites since Wednesday night. A Arun, additional commissioner of police (traffic), said that the police have collected CCTV footage from the area and are hoping to catch the riders soon.

It looks like that both the incidents happened on Tuesday night following the police relaxed vigil on road after new year festivities.

These riders used to trigger sparks by pushing side-stand down while the bike moves on good speed. “Now they are trying to do the same by dragging barricades,” a traffic official noted.

In one video two youngsters, without helmet were seen riding a bike and the pillion dragging the police barricade on the Kamarajar Salai, triggering sparks. The video was visibly taken from another bike which was following the biker in action.

In second video, six youths in three modified bikes, were seen speeding on the Gandhi Mandapam Road and one of the pillion rider wearing a helmet was dragging the metal barricade triggering sparks on the road, as others cheered. He let off the barricade later, which fell on the footpath. In this case also, the video was shot by a pillion rider of another bike.

After these videos went viral, a case was registered by the police.

Traffic police were deployed on both the stretches of the roads and checking the available CCTV footage and trying to identify the vehicle numbers and riders.

It may be noted that the Chennai police had been cracking whip on speeding bikers using the last one week and on December 25, as many as 100 motorbikes that were found speeding along the Santhome High road and nearby areas were seized and cases were booked against the motorists.

Police noted that over speeding was prevalent during late nights. Despite continuous efforts by the city police, youths managed to perform such risky acts and endanger their lives as well of other motorists, official added.
