Prices of shallots, drumstick dip after two months

According to traders, the business was largely affected in the last two months as cost of vegetables skyrocketed. But now they have decreased considerably. The price of drumstick, which was sold at Rs 120 to Rs 130 a kg last week, is now sold at Rs 80 to Rs 100 a kg. Similarly, prices of small onion, which went up to Rs 150 a kg, have come down to Rs 80 to Rs 90 a kg. However, the rate of Bellary onion still stands at Rs 40 to Rs 50 a kg.

Price of other vegetables like tomato and potato has steeply fallen to Rs 10 and Rs 15 respectively. Before a month, tomatoes were sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg.

“Vegetables like beans, broad beans and cauliflower are sold at Rs 30, Rs 25 and Rs 25 respectively,” said a trader.

VR Soundararajan, president of Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable, Fruits and Flowers Association and a member of Market Management Committee, said, “Increase in the inflow of vegetables has resulted in the decrease of vegetable price, which is expected to fall further. The farmers in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have begun the harvest of various crops following which the number of lorries to the market has increased,” he said.

However, the prices are slightly higher in other retail markets in the city and suburbs. “The vegetable prices are increased by Rs 10 to Rs 20 a kg depending on the transport charges incurred,” said K Nandhagopal, a vendor in Aminjikarai market.
