TN publisher focus of Japanese book expo
City-based publishing house Tara Books, in a first-of-its-kind honour for Indian publishers, is the subject of an exhibition at the Itabashi museum in Tokyo, Japan.
Chennai
Titled Beautiful Books Can Change the World: The Universe of Tara Books, the exhibit will run on until January 8.
It features over 300 original pieces of artwork, created by folk and tribal artists for Tara’s various publications, first editions of books and short movies on the making of books — and is a celebration of the company’s 23 years of bookmaking.
Tara Books publisher, Gita Wolf, and editorial director, V Geetha, were invited to Japan – to take part in the opening of the exhibition and to participate in a series of other events, including a symposium on viable and creative independent publishing.
“Gita Wolf did a workshop with Japanese illustrators in 2013 at the Itabashi Museum on the form of the book. Based on what she spoke and did, the Museum’s curator Kiyoko Matsuoka decided to work on getting an exhibition on Tara Books’ publishing journey together — for display at her museum.
This is the first time an Indian publisher has been granted that honour and opportunity to present their work at the museum,” said Geetha.
In a rare distinction, Empress Michiko, the Empress consort of Japan also visited the museum and even remarked that she found the exhibition interesting.
Of special interest is the Gond exhibit, with focus on one of Tara Books’ iconic handmade books, The Night Life of Trees. Published in eight languages, including Japanese, the book’s many editions are on display.
