City, suburbs see more pubs after ban relaxation
Ever since the Supreme Court relaxed the highway liquor ban that rocked bars and pubs across the country, including Chennai, it’s been merry times for patrons in the city. Not only are old favourites back up and running, but a deluge of new resto-bars has flooded neighbourhoods, unattached to any hotel, and giving people multiple options.
Chennai
Secret Society, Thirsty Crow, Cycle Gap, Submarine, Watson’s, the re-launched Velveteen Rabbit... these are just some of the recent additions to Chennai’s party scene, and the list continues to keep growing.
“There are approximately 15 more pubs opening in the next few months, and this is just the beginning. Ever since Amma’s death and the fluctuating government, it has become easy to bribe your way into getting licences. A lot of investors want to convert their black money into white – and feel that opening a pub is the best way,” said an insider from the beverage industry.
With the social and film scene in Chennai ready to actively support these ventures by attending openings, actors turning guest DJs, models promoting pubs through shoots, etc, it is no surprise everyone wants to cash in on the opportunity.
Designer Karun Raman, who is a regular at most of these places, added that it’s mostly the NRIs or people from other cities in Tamil Nadu like Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchy who are opening such properties. “There are a lot of rich people waiting to capitalise on this. Especially investors from non-metros are looking to experience the whole nightlife scene, and it’s a great way to make contacts and network with the elite. They want to bring the Bengaluru culture to Namma Ooru – how successful they are going to be, is altogether another story.”
But with liquor licences having been so notoriously tough to be approved earlier, how is it that the process seems easier now? Aras Dennis, consultant and associate at several pubs, insists that everything is being done through the right channels – “All these new openings – they applied for licences over a year ago, and are reaping the benefits of their patience now. Chennaiites are excited at the variety that is unfolding of late.”
