The sonic boom of the aircraft was silenced by the sound of slogans by the DMK cadre at Chennai airport when the recently acquitted leaders in the 2G spectrum case Kanimozhi and A Raja touched down at the terminal in Meenambakkam on Saturday.
A visibly jubilant DMK working president MK Stalin went all the way to the airport and received them by presenting shawls, first to Raja and then to his sister Kanimozhi.
After a brief photo-op, an ecstatic Kanimozhi embraced her brother Stalin, who reciprocated with pats on her back before murmuring, “Aadhi varalaya” (Did Aadhi (Kani’s son) not accompany her).” Kanimozhi replied, “Illa anna…. avan (no brother….he),” in a feeble voice.
The who’s who of the DMK were waiting to express solidarity with the two acquitted leaders and the sound of crackers and sloganeering reached a crescendo when they came out of the lounge.
The ecstasy quotient of the DMK cadre doubled an hour later at Gopalapuram, while Kanimozhi and Raja called on Karunanidhi, who was all smiles in the company of his wife Rajathi Ammal, party general secretary K Anbazhagan and principal headquarters secretary Duraimurugan among others.
An elated Karunanidhi rolled his wheel chair down to the doorway on the ground floor and waved his hands at the anxious cadre gathered outside the house. In the recent times, it is a rare thing that the nonagenarian has come out.
He has been seen only a handful of times since returning from hospital in December 2016.
Unlike in New Delhi, where Raja’s loyalists stole the show, Kanimozhi’s supporters painted the area red outside her residence in CIT Colony on Saturday afternoon, which was aired live in the party backed Kalaignar News channel.
BJP need not apologise for 2G case, says Vanathi
BJP state secretary Vanathi Srinivasan on Saturday deplored why her party should apologise when the Supreme Court itself had accepted that irregularities had been committed in the allocation of 2G spectrum and cancelled the licences of companies. She said the issue was taken up by the Supreme Court and the BJP took the issue to the people as an opposition party. She pointed out that the chargesheet was filed during the UPA government and a case was decided based on the evidence submitted to the court. She also claimed that the government’s revenue from spectrum allocation had gone up during the NDA regime due to the transparency in the process. The BJP government did not file the case and it need not seek apology for the verdict. As a true opposition, the party discharged its function in Parliament raising the issue since the Supreme Court itself stated that the policy of spectrum was wrong. The case is yet to end as the CBI has promised to go in appeal, she added.
