Police said that the victims, SSI Venkatesan and SI Bhuvaneswari, were deployed on duty at the SP’s office on Thursday night. They were proceeding a motorcycle on the Chengalpattu – Kancheepuram Highway near Old Cheevaram at 9.30 pm when a sand lorry allegedly rammed their vehicle, and both died on the spot. Police said that a sand lorry hit the motorcycle from behind and in the impact, both of them were thrown off the vehicle. Top police officials including Kancheepuram Range Deputy Inspector General of Police P.C. Thenmozhi, Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santosh Hadimani and others visited the spot and conducted the preliminary enquiries.
Police are probing if the two police officials were killed in an accident or if it was a deliberate attempt to kill them. “Since the two officers were on their way to check out a quarry site, we suspect if they could have been deliberately run over by the sand mafia,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity. The Palur police have registered a case and are investigating.
