    Customs officials unearth novel modus operandi, seize four kg gold worth Rs 1.15 crore at Chennai airport

    Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit on Thursday seized four kg gold worth Rs 1.15 crore from a flight that arrived from Dubai at the Anna International airport and unearthed a novel modus operandi in smuggling of the yellow metal.

    An official release said, acting on specific intelligence that gold was being smuggled into India from Dubai, Custom Officers of Air Intelligence Unit rummaged the Air India flight AI-906 which arrived from Dubai early morning.

    The aircraft was destined to Delhi as AI-440 on domestic leg.

    During the course of rummaging, two black coloured pouches were recovered from the two rear toilets, which were found concealed behind the commode.

    Upon opening the pouches, two rectangular shaped heavy objects wrapped with black adhesive tape was found in each pouch.

    On cutting open the black adhesive tapes two gold bars bearing foreign marking 'International Precious Metal Refiners 1 Kilo 995 gold' were recovered from each pouch.

    A total of four gold bars were recovered.

    The government of India approved gold appraiser certified them to be of 24 karat purity.

    The four gold bars weighing four kg and valued at Rs 1.15 crores were seized under the provisions of Custom Act, 1962.

    Further investigations were under progress.
