Women’s group campaigns for ethical voting

A group of around 30 people, belonging to a group called ‘Voice of People’, campaigned in RK Nagar on ethical voting on Tuesday. Urging the residents there to vote honestly, based on their needs and for the good of the society, the campaigners stressed on the importance of ethical voting through songs.

Stating that the campaign was held with permission from the Election Commission, Charu Govindan, a member of the organisation, said, “It was held by the citizens for the residents of RK Nagar to take the elections beyond regular parties and poll promises and the flags. We stressed on the need for them to focus on people’s values, their rights while voting and we focussed on bringing them into active participation governance.”

While this was stressed during the campaign, it was done so through dialogue and songs, focussing on what the power behind the actual individual vote is.

“During the course of our campaign, we also engaged with people. We went to three different areas which were actually marked by the Election Commission and the AE and police accompanied us. The residents there were surprised as they had not seen any campaign besides those put up by the parties and candidates,” added Charu.

Seeing the members, the residents put forth questions like why the campaigners waited until the last day. “Stressing that even the last-minute counts, we told them that they should elect a person who can work efficiently,” Charu noted.
