Amritraj’s signature wines now in Chennai

Grover Zampa Vineyards, a longstanding wine producer, recently launched the Vijay Amritraj Reserve Collection in Chennai. The premium wines, said to be inspired by Amritraj’s legendary volleys on the centre court and iconic game play, are now available for the first time in his hometown.

To create this special collection, Grover Zampa Vineyards and Amritraj collaborated on this project for over two years and this red and white wine have subsequently won 19 prestigious awards since their initial launch in 2014. Amritraj said, “The wines are a perfect amalgamation of passion and sophistication. I am delighted that they are now available in Chennai.”

Talking to DTNext, Kapil Grover, Chairman, Grover Zampa Vineyards said “My association with Vijay Amritraj dates back to about eight years, when we caught up over a game of golf. When we met, Vijay told me, I am a sports guy, I am not into hard liquor, I am more into wine. Can we create something together? I knew then that we had to launch a range of premium red and white wines together. Over the next five years, we turned out to be great friends and played around and fine tuned the idea of the wine. Three years back, we launched the wine in London at a party hosted by Vijay, held during that one day of rest during Wimbledon. We followed this with launches in India, Paris, Japan and US.”

He adds, “The tragedy was that we couldn’t launch it in his own hometown here with his family and friends, in Chennai, due to an excise regulation. We barrel aged the Vijay wines for one year, as opposed to La Reserve wines that are barrel aged for six months. The Vijay Amritraj wines would be priced approximately around Rs 1,400 and 1,500 in TN, tentatively, depending on state excise. We are currently supplying to star properties in the state.

The white is a barrel-fermented varietal Viognier, aged in new oak barrels for 3 months while the red wine is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, matured for 12 months in oak. Besides distribution in India, these wines are available internationally in USA, UK, Australia, France, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Singapore, Nepal and others.
