A 45-year-old sub-inspector attached to Aminjikarai police station narrowly escaped with injuries after a burglary suspect stabbed him on his shoulder in an escape bid on Sunday night.

The SI, Srinivasan is undergoing treatment at Billroth Hospital at Shenoy Nagar, while the accused Manikandan (23) is admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital, as he slit his throat after police officers surrounded him.
The incident took place at 11.30 pm on Thiruveedhi Amman Street when Srinivasan along with other police officers were involved in the patrol duty.
When they tried to intercept a passer-by on suspicion, the latter started running from the spot after seeing the police. While the sub-inspector gave a chase and caught him, he stabbed the officer on his right shoulder with a knife and tried to escape.
Srinivasan fell unconscious and the other police officers surrounded the culprits.
Meanwhile, the accused slit his throat, after which police officials secured him and admitted to the hospital.
Later, police identified him as Manikandan, a wanted criminal involved in several burglary and chain-snatching incidents across the city.
Aminjikarai inspector Perundurai Murugan said that Srinivasan is out of danger and added that Manikandan will be booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.
City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan on Monday visited Srinivasan in hospital and inquired with the doctors about his health condition.
