Facilities unused in Tambaram PHC for lack of GO
Two years after a Primary Health Centre (PHC) was constructed in Tambaram, the hospital staff provide treatment to only those patients who are affected by fever and cold. Even though facilities like scanning and delivery are available in the PHC, the staff say that they are waiting for Government Order (GO) to use such facilities.

The PHC was started in 2011 and renovated in a big way in 2015 at the cost of Rs 75 lakh. The renovated PHC was opened by former Minister T K M Chinnayya. Tambaram is one of the suburbs of the city witnessing fastest growth in terms of populaiton and real estate investments, said a resident. The PHC seemed to be the perfect answer to a crying need, he added.
However, with the facilities not fully functional, patients are forced to travel to Chrompet Government GH to avail of the same. “We were very happy when this hospital was built, but they have not begun to use the available facilities. Pregnant women in particular are affected,” said Ramesh (45) a resident of Tambaram.
“The hospital has every facility available for treatment protocol of pregnant women but the staff are reluctant to take the initiative. The SO (Sanitary officer) of Tambaram has not made a single visit to the hospital for the past one year. The PHC does not function round the clock either, ” claimed Nagoorkani, ex-Councillor of the locality.
When contacted, K Krishnamurthy, Commissioner of the Tambaram Municipality, said, “Soon I will visit the PHC and measures will be in place for using all the available facilities.”
