When the five special teams searching for him in Chennai and other areas received a tipoff about him been seen boarding a bus to Mumbai, three teams rushed to the city.

"We gathered booking details, CCTV footage and matched it with his identity.

After confirming that he was found at Tardeo police station limit in Central Mumbai, a team led by Kundrathur inspector C Charles and SI Porpadham secured him," said Sarvesh Raj, Deputy Commissioner of police (Ambattur district).

The Deputy Commissioner said that Dashwanth did not attempt to flee and cooperated with the police.

Sources said that a cell phone and cash were retrieved from Dashwanth, who reportedly admitted to killing his mother.

The sources said police received information that Dashwanth and his father Sekar were horse-racing enthusiasts and that both would often go to Guindy race course.

"We searched for him around the Race Course area in Chennai and the same method was used in Mumbai. It worked in the police's favour," said the source.

Dashwanth’s mother Sarala, 45, was found dead in her house in Kundrathur on Saturday and her jewellery was missing.

His father Sekar filed a complaint at Kundrathur police station stating that his son had murdered his wife. He said there was a quarrel between them over money which led to the murder.

Dashwanth was arrested for the rape-murder of a six-year old girl in February this year. He was released on bail in September after which he allegedly murdered his mother.
