Workplace problems: Bomb squad men write to Centre
The ex-servicemen, who constitute the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), which takes care of the security of VVIPs in the state, have written to the Union Defence Minister and the state Governor alleging several harassments by state police officials, that include demand for alcohol from Defence canteen.

All over the state there are around 120 BDDS technicians, while in Chennai alone there are 70 BDDS men who on a routine basis help the police to sterilise areas used by the VVIPs.
These specially qualified bomb technicians trained by Indian Army were recruited specially for being part of the squad which makes sure that all VVIPs, including state and national leaders, besides foreign delegates, enjoy absolute security.
In a letter sent to Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the BDDS has alleged ill-treatment by the state police officers.
“After the demise of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the police officers did not treat us properly.
Earlier, they never interrupted in our work. They never used to even talk to us and never disturbed us.
Now they want us to buy liquor for them at the minimum rate from the Defence canteen. The police officers are treating us like slaves,” one of the BDDS member said.
“Whenever we tried to approach the senior officers with our complaint, we are threatened with immediate transfer, punishment or extra duty imposition. We have joined BDDS in TN after serving the country at borders many years, but here the situation is worse than the border,” the letter noted.
“We don’t even have the mandatory roll call, which is there for all other police units. If there is a roll call on a regular basis, we can at least inform higher ups about our difficulties,” another BDDS member said.
