The arrested have been identified as S Vijay alias Tamizhselvan (18) of Otteri and S Karthick Kumar (20) of Ayanavaram. While Vijay works as a water can supplier, Karthik Kumar is a second-year diploma engineering student of Aalim Muhammed Salegh College of Engineering in Avadi.

After police released the photo of one of the accused persons and sought information about him from public, the duo was said to have been nabbed based on specific inputs. Based on the information by Krishna Deep Menon, CEO (Grass roots), Chennaiyin FC, a case was booked under Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act and four special teams were formed to nab the miscreants.

During the investigation, the two youngsters reportedly told the police that their intention was not to abuse the northeast people present in the stadium. “We behaved so out of excitement during the match,” they were quoted as saying by the police officers. However, the process is on to remand them in judicial custody, added police.

City Commissioner of Police (CoP) AK Viswanathan congratulated Vepery Assistant Commissioner and Periament inspector for arresting the accused within a short period. The incident took place on November 23 during the football match between ChennaiyinFC and Northeast United FC at Nehru stadium as part of the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL). Soon after a video of Northeast United fans being surrounded by a group of men went viral on the social media the next day, many condemned the incident from across the country.
