Treatment delay cost Moulika her life, say friends

Even as the police began investigation into the suicide of 18-year-old Moulika who hanged herself on Wednesday, students who were present during the incident said that a delay in allowing her brother Rakesh Reddy inside the girls’ hostel could have cost the young woman’s life.

Students claimed that the security guards posted at the hostel did not allow him inside since they did not understand English or Telugu. “Despite him telling the guards that his sister might have committed suicide, he was not allowed to enter since they did not understand the language. After a Tamil-speaking student explained to them, they rushed to Moulika’s room along with Rakesh. But it was all over by then,” a close friend of Rakesh Reddy told DT Next.

Meanwhile, Facebook posts by Sathyabhama University students claimed that Moulika could have died as there were no senior doctors at the hospital when she was rushed there. “Around 12 pm, she reached Sathyabama General Hospital. Senior doctors weren’t available there. The junior medical help which was present were not able to help her (sic).” The post also alleged that she may have slit her wrist before hanging herself. However, none of these details could be verified by this newspaper.

Moulika’s father Dhuruva Reddy who came to Goverment Royapettah Hospital on Thursday to receive her body after post-mortem said that his wife is not yet aware of her daughter’s death and blamed the university administration for Moulika’s death. “Copying in a university exam is not such a big crime. Instead of abusing my daughter in front of everyone, they could have informed me about my daughter’s conduct. She is no more, but such an incident should not be repeated in the campus and authorities should initiate proper action against the university,” he said.
