Over the weekend, actor-turned politician Karunas and his associates reportedly got into a fight at the nightclub, and police have booked six of the men involved. However, at that time, the reason for the brawl was not revealed.

Now, the complainant, a businessman from Anna Nagar named R Bharaneeshwaran, has alleged that it was sheer high-handedness on the part of Karunas’ men that led to the fight.

“I met Karunas and exchanged pleasantries with him. That’s when this person called Damodarakrishnan, a lawyer who is also the general secretary of Karunas’ outfit, introduced himself to me. He said, ‘I am ‘defender’ Damodaran’, but I didn’t respond properly. That’s when he got wild and started abusing me and later hit me with a bottle,” said Bharaneeswaran, who is still recovering from his injuries in hospital.

I drink, but I don’t encourage violence: Karunas
Actor-turned politician Karunas admitted that he was at the club, but denied encouraging the attack.
“I went clubbing with my friends after seven years. When I entered the pub, I saw that some of my costars, director Ameer and composer Anirudh Ravichander in the pub. We were having a nice time when some miscommunication took place and the brawl as you saw in the video started. Sensing that there will be some trouble, we left the place.”
However, Karunas says the accused and the victim knew each other. When asked why he did not attempt to stop his men from attacking the victim, he said, “Had I been involved in the incident, by now there would have been an FIR filed against me. I’m someone who openly admits to drinking. But I don’t encourage such violence in public.”
The police arrested Ajay, youth wing secretary of the party, in connection with the case, registered under five sections including attempt to murder.
Lawyer brothers Damodarakrishnan and Gokulakrishnan, who are wanted in the case on Wednesday personally appeared before a sessions court seeking anticipatory bail. The bail plea was dismissed by the court. “Hope the police will arrest the suspect at least now,” Bharaneeswaran told this newspaper.
