Chain snatcher caught at gunpoint after chase by inspector
A chain snatcher was chased and caught at gunpoint by Kundrathur inspector Charles on Tuesday night in Kumanamchavadi, after the accused tried to attack the officer with a knife in public view while he was trying to escape after snatching a 10-sovereign gold chain from a woman in Kaatupakkam near Poonamallee.

According to the police, the suspect Irfan, was speeding with his associate on a bike after snatching the chain from one Mallika Sasikumar when the inspector’s jeep reached the scene of crime.
After collecting the details of the suspects and their vehicle, police inspector chased the bike borne duo. At Kumanamchavadi junction the inspector spotted the bike of the suspects. Seeing the police jeep, the two men began to flee in different directions, leaving the vehicle behind. The inspector started running after one suspect and caught him.Â
But it turned out to be squabble on the ground after which the chain snatcher brandished a knife. The police officer had to pull out his gun to apprehend him.
Immediately the inspector’s jeep driver and couple of onlookers overpowered the suspect.Â
The onlookers also thrashed the man as the police took him to the police station. Police later identified the suspect as Irfan (35) of Patalam.Â
