Traffic cops get their hands dirty, repair damaged roads
Following several hours of traffic congestion in different parts of the city on Tuesday, due to rain-affected roads, the Traffic police swung into action and repaired the potholes, instead of waiting for Chennai Corporation.

A few traffic policemen were seen filling the potholes on Chamiers Road with concrete mix on Wednesday. When contacted, Traffic Inspector Thiruvengadam, attached to Triplicane range, said that traffic movement was affected on Greenways Road and Anna Salai for hours at a stretch,
as they were riddled with potholes after the rains.
“On Facebook too, a motorist had complained that it took about an hour to cross a half-kilometre stretch near Mylapore. Traffic became normal only after 9.30 pm. So, we wanted to fix the road ourselves after inspecting them,” he said.
Traffic police got in touch with a private construction firm for the concrete mix and began fixing the potholes on Greenways Road on Tuesday night. The work continued till Wednesday morning, right up to Chamiers Road. “Around seven policemen worked on Tuesday night. Our Deputy Commissioner too was at the spot, monitoring the work, which will continue in the coming days,” added Thiruvengadam. The officer added that the movement of traffic was smooth on Wednesday, following the repair works.
Police sources said that underground cable work by TANGEDCO affected the storm water drain network in the locality, leading to waterlogging at several places as well as erosion of roads. “The public are the affected lot, so we did not want to wait till the Corporation takes up the repair works,” added Thiruvengadam. Traffic cops were seen fixing the roads in Vepery, near the Police Commissioner’s office as well.
