Schools are now contemplating ways to finish the portions. R J Bhuvanesh, CEO of Kaligi Ammal Ranganathan Education Trust says, “Once the school reopens, we will have a meeting with the teachers. During the 2015 floods, when the schools remained closed for several days, we had to cut short the December holidays and hold classes. This year too, we might have to do the same.”

Students set to appear for the board exam likewise feel that their preparations are affected due to the unexpected break. “This year is different from other years. Apart from the regular exams, we have to simultaneously prepare for competitive exams like NEET,” says S Meenakshi, a Class 11 State Board student.

She further adds, “I will be writing the board exams this year and this is the first time that Class 11 will be taking the exams and the students are apprehensive about having enough time to prepare.” However, Tamil Nadu Teachers Association President PK Ilamaran said, “The school education minister has already said that the school will  be open on all Saturdays and that there is enough time to prepare. Students writing the board exams do not have to worry as most of the schools will be organising special classes after school, to help them prepare,”

Educationists say that often, in situations like this, it is subjects like Physical Education and Language that are compromised. KR Maalathi, an education consultant says, “The time designated for each subject is decided at the beginning of the year. There are only certain number of unexpected holidays a school can accommodate. In such situations, it is the PE or activity classes that are borrowed. Some schools even cancel cultural fests.”
