The active North-East monsoon rains have increased the storage to around two tmc of water from one in the city lakes, bringing a sigh of relief to the residents and Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

However, the Public Works Department (WRD) officials said that the inflow to reservoirs has reduced. G Vijayakumar, Executive Engineer, PWD, Kosasthalaiyar Division told DT Next, “On Thursday morning, the total storage in all the lakes was 1,925 million cubic feet and there is a high possibility that the storage might increase by two tmc by Thursday night,” he said and added that they patrol the lakes round the clock to keep a tab on all water bodies falling under Chennai region.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has decided to increase drinking water supply to the residents. “We have so far supplied only around 400 MLD of water, as surface water was not available. Since the monsoon rains increased the storage, the board will draw water from both Red Hills and Chembarambakkam lakes,” said an official and added that they would soon supply the prescribed 830 MLD per day to the residents.
