    35 suffer burns during Deepavali celebrations

    As many as 35 people suffered burns, while bursting crackers during Deepavali celebrations this year and nine of them have been admitted at the special ward of Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital, till Thursday with more than 20 per cent burns.

    Though 42 cases were reported last year during Deepavali, doctors said that the number of cases may go up this year since, similar cases are expected to be reported at least for a week until bursting of crackers subside. Among the 35 cases this year, 26 were reported on Deepavali day. 

    S Rajapandian (35) from Tiruverkadu, was admitted on Wednesday with 41 per cent injuries in his left hand, chest and back. He is said to have been inebriated at the time of the accident and how he suffered injuries is yet to be recorded. 

    Others who are undergoing treatment at KMC special ward include a few children, S Mithra (5) from Soonambedu with 20 per cent burns, R Selvakumar (11) from Walajah with 25 per cent burns, R Rajaram (11) from Srimushnam with 21 per cent burns, K Kishorekumar (16) from Mogappair with 22 per cent burns, Jeeva (7) from Tirunavalur with 15 per cent and M Azaruddin (10) from Lloyds Road with 20 per cent. While some of them suffered facial burns, two tried to burst crackers keeping it in hand and suffered injuries.

    Meanwhile, Dr Nirmala of KMC said that a special ward has been created with dedicated to treat people visiting the hospital with burn injuries. 

    A 10-bed room with all the necessary medicine and equipment has been set up at hospital, said the doctor. Meanwhile, a man, fractured his leg while bursting crackers at Chitra Nagar in Kotturpuram, on Wednesday, after he was hit by a police vehicle. 

    The victim Maayan, is undergoing treatment at Royapettah Government Hospital and Sastri Nagar police are investigating the incident.
