In a disturbing incident, a Class 6 student committed suicide on Sunday night after his parents allegedly yelled at him for cleaning a playground as part of the ongoing anti-dengue programme in Chrompet.
Chennai
The deceased, Nishanth (12) was the second son of Murugavel and Samundeeswari while their elder son is studying in Class 9 of the same government school. Murugavel works in a leather processing unit in the locality while Samundeeswari is a housewife.
Police said that after noticing the anti-dengue campaign programmes conducted in his locality Meenakshi Amman Nagar, Nishanth took a few friends with him and cleaned the nearby playground on Sunday.
However, when he returned home around 7.30 pm, his parents reportedly screamed at him upon seeing Nishanth as he was covered with dirt from the cleaning activity and asked him to take a bath. “The parents could have worried that he might catch an infection and fall sick,” police said.
Nishanth, who went into the bathroom, did not return for a long time and there was no response when they called him out.
Immediately, the parents broke open the door to find him hanging from the ventilator window using a piece of cloth. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead.
