The deceased have been identified as Balraj (51), a farmer, and Ragunathan, a lorry driver (48) of Kumaranayakkanpet village. After noticing that one of his goats fell into a 25-feet deep dilapidated well, Balraj along with his friend Ragunathan got into the well using a rope. However, they inhaled some poisonous gas and died inside the well. The goat too was found dead.

On information, Pathirivedu police and fire personnel rushed to the spot and recovered their bodies. The fire personnel had to take measures to nullify the effects of the gas before taking out the bodies, said sources. The bodies were sent to Ponneri Government Hospital for post-mortem.
