    8 killed in road accidents across Chennai in a day

    City roads seem to be turning more dangerous for motorists and pedestrians as eight people, including two women died, in accidents at different parts of Chennai on Sunday. Nine others sustained injuries.

    In one of the incidents, two bike-borne youth were run over by an MTC bus in Ayanavaram on Sunday night. The deceased have been identified as R Manikandan (20) from Villivakam and S Tamilarasan (19) from Sidco Nagar, who worked as painters.

    In a similar incident, two friends, met with an accident as their bike rammed the median at Meenambakkam subway. While Gurumoorthy (24) died on the spot, Kalaiselvan (24) has been admitted at hospital with injuries.

    They worked as painters and are from Nanganallur.

    In yet another accident, a 36-year-old man died after his bike collided with another bike coming from the opposite direction on Sunday night. The deceased, Sureshkumar, is a resident of Ayapakkam. Meanwhile, two other youngsters died in Madhavaram in separate accidents. Manikandan (31), a software engineer from Madhavaram Milk Colony, was crushed between a wall and a container lorry when he was returning home on his Pulsar two-wheeler from his office in Ambattur.

    The incident took place near Dasaratha Naidu Marriage Hall. In another accident, Rajini (25), a daily wager, was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle. On Old Mahabalipuram Road, 50-year-old Rahini was fatally hit by a speeding two-wheeler in Thoraipakkam.

    The motorist Kavya Singh (25) too sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. In Shenoy Nagar, an elderly woman, Kanniyamma, died in a road accident.

    Buses collide near Coimbatore, 30 passengers injured
    A private bus and a government bus collided in Annur taluk of Coimbatore district on Monday morning injuring over thirty passengers some of whom are in a critical condition.
    The accident happened when the private bus was leaving a bus depot in Sathiyamangalam and was heading towards Coimbatore. The government bus, meanwhile, was headed towards the depot from Coimbatore.
    Police said that the private bus overtook a lorry on the left and collided with the government bus. According to them, both vehicles were speeding on the road causing the mishap.
    Members of the public, who witnessed the collision immediately went to the rescue of the passengers who were injured or trapped inside the vehicles.
    The victims were rushed to the government hospital in Coimbatore.
    Incidence of buses racing and vehicles driven in a rash manner has become a menace, of late. Last week, six persons travelling in an SUV died after a government bus collided with the vehicle in Tiruppur, on Friday. The car driver suffered grievous injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
    The bus was on its way from Erode to Coimbatore when it hit an SUV from behind on the Thekkalur bypass bridge near Avinashi. In the impact, the car fell down from a height of 25 feet. All six passengers in the SUV died on the spot. However, none of the passengers in the bus was injured.
    Earlier in April, a video of racing buses on the Pollachi-Coimbatore highway surfaced following which the concerned RTO had arrested the two drivers and withheld their licences, as well as seizing 23 buses for over speeding and endangering passengers’ lives. A similar video emerged two months later again prompting action.
